Value Learning
It’s important to show your child that learning is about more than just passing a test, or listing facts. If you value learning as an important part of life, it will rub off on your child too! While of course teach them so they can pass their tests, also show them how to learn on their own, and that learning is fun!
Don’t Try to be a Traditional Classroom
There’s no rule that states learning has to be done at a desk or from a textbook! While you should take some inspiration from the school system, don’t feel like everything has to be exactly the same. Nature walks, learning games, and even trips to a local science museum can happen whenever you choose!
Get Involved In Clubs
Just because a child is homeschooled doesn’t mean they don’t want to play sports! Talk to your child about what clubs or organizations they want to join. This will help give them something constructive to do in their downtime, but will also help them make friends and socialize!
Join Support Groups
There are plenty of groups out there to help homeschoolers come together, share ideas, and keep each other going. Check places like Home-school.comor Facebook for local groups. Some even host meetups and days where everyone has a homeschool class together!
Know Your State’s Requirements
Homeschooling gives you a lot of freedom with your child’s education and how they learn, but you will still need to make sure you’re meeting your state’s requirements. Homeschool Legal Defense Association is a great resource to start learning about your state’s regulations!
Create a School Space
Successful homeschool moms create a separate area for schooling, away from common areas of the home to keep things mentally separate. This really helps your child get in the learning mindset when they head into their first class of the day!
Use Technology
Don’t be afraid to use online tools to enrich your child’s learning experience! These tools exist for a reason, and in an increasingly technology-reliant world, they will help your child to know how to use them properly.
Be Open to Changes
If your child is struggling to keep up or is not taking to the lesson plan like you thought, feel free to change it up! Everybody learns differently, and you have the advantage of one on one time with your student. Tailor the plans to their needs to help them excel!
Stay Organized
The worst thing for a child is their teacher not being organized. This could inadvertently teach them that it’s okay to be messy or disorganized. Keeping an organized classroom and plan will teach them about responsibility by example, and will help you save time preparing!
Be a Teacher, Not a Lecturer
Keep them engaged, let them interrupt to ask questions, let them try new methods of learning even if they’re not in the plan. There’s a reason lectures are saved for college-aged kids, younger children simply don’t learn well from them.
It’s okay to be nervous about homeschooling, but don’t let that stop you! With these tips, your homeschooling experience is sure to be successful!
