This Put Me in the Zoo Craft is a great way to make reading fun…and to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America!
It’s always fun when you can do a craft or activity that directly relates to a book you’ve read with your children. Kids seem to remember more of the story, and they pay attention closely if they know there’s an activity involved. If you want to add more learning into your day, pair this slime activity with a Put Me in the Zoo alphabet activity.
And because you know we love coming up with new slime recipes around here, this Put Me in the Zoo Craft was a definite hit.
We have recently been working on some Dr. Seuss crafts, since his birthday is coming up on March 2. This day is also known as Read Across America. Many schools celebrate this day (or the entire week!) by doing Dr. Seuss-themed activities or by having their students dress up in a different wacky way every day. It’s a lot of fun and brings more awareness to reading – a win win!

So Put Me in the Zoo isn’t actually written by Dr. Seuss, but by Robert Lopshire. It was published back in 1960 on Dr. Seuss’ publishing imprint, and you see the famous cat in the hat on the cover of many editions of the book. It’s a fun story to read about a brightly-spotted leopard proving that he belongs in the zoo.
Dr. Seuss Put Me in the Zoo Craft: SLIME
This slime is really easy to make. We loved the pops of color that explode from the slime once the pom poms are added! They look just like the colorful leopard spots we saw in the book.
Supplies
- 5 oz bottle of Clear Elmer’s Glue
- 7- 8 Teaspoons of Elmer’s Magical Liquid
- Small Pom Pom’s (Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple)
Directions
Pour clear glue into a bowl. Add 3 teaspoons of the Magical liquid and mix well.
Add pom pom’s and mix well. The mixture will still be sticky at this point.
Now add another 3 teaspoons of the magical liquid and mix well. The mixture should be getting less sticky at this point. If it’s still sticky, add one more teaspoon of the magical liquid and start to knead with hands.
Continue to knead until it’s no longer sticky.
Have fun playing with your slime! It can be stored in an airtight baggie for up to one week.
