What is Scattergories?

Scattergories is a word-based game that challenges your quick thinking and creativity.

Here’s how it works: players get a list of categories like “fruits,” “sports teams,” or “things you find at the beach.” A letter is chosen at the start of each round, and everyone must write down a word for each category that begins with that letter. For example, if the letter is “B” and the category is “fruits,” you might write “banana.”

But, you want your answer to be as unique as possible because your answer only counts if no one else has the same word! You earn a point for each answer you write down that no one else writes down. There is a set amount of time to go through your list and write down your answers; once time is up, everyone compares answers to see who came up with the most creative responses. It’s a great game for groups, and it’s easy to play at parties or family gatherings.

This printable fall Scattergories game is very similar to the original game, but has a fall-theme and is easy to just print out and play.

This printable set includes three printable pages, each with a different list of categories, with four different chosen letters on each page so you can play each list of categories four times.

How to Play Fall Scattergories

Here is a brief overview on how to play Fall Scattergories.

Pick which page you’d like to play and print out a page for each player. Set a timer for three minutes. When you start the timer, each player will go down the list of categories on the page and write in a word for that category that starts with the first letter on the page (so if you are using the PINE page, you will start with the letter P column).

When the time is up, everyone will go around and compare answers. If no one else wrote down the same answer, you get a point. Then set the timer again and move on to the next letter (on the PINE page, you’d now be on the I column).

Go through all of the letters like this and when you are done with the four rounds, whoever has the most points, wins.

Game playing tips & ideas

You can make the game harder or easier by adjusting the length of time per round based on the ages and abilities of the players.

You can swap the words at the top of the page (PINE, LEAF, CORN) to the other pages so that you mix up the letters used for each list of categories. Or you can create your own words at the top, or just simply choose, at random, your own letters for each category list.

Once you have your supplies, this is what you’ll need to do:
