We aren’t big into Valentine’s Day around here. I can’t even remember the last time my husband and I went out on a Valentine’s date or got each other a gift for the holiday.
But don’t feel sorry for me, gifts rank last on my Love Language list, and I’d much rather just hang out at home then go out and fight the crowds to overpay for a fancy dinner. No thanks. Not my cup of tea.
As for Valentines with my kids, I will usually get them a small candy treat and plan an afternoon to make some heart-shaped brownies or cookies. We might also do a craft at some point and if I really have my butt in gear, I’ll buy them little Valentines to take to their friends at our homeschool co-op and/or church.
We aren’t anti-Valentines (although I do feel it is waaaaay, over-the-top, commercialized), we just like to keep things simple. I feel like many people celebrate Valentine’s Day for the wrong reasons and give gifts and do ‘acts of love’ out of obligation, rather then it being their heart’s desire. And that’s just sad.
Shouldn’t we be loving each other every day of the year? Shouldn’t we be showing each other love all year round?
When we love others, truly love them and love on them, we have the opportunity to show them God’s love; we can shine God’s love upon them. And while I’m not a big proponent of Valentine’s Day, it is an excellent time to teach our kids about the love of God and how we can show others just how big God’s love is. It’s as big as an elephant – well, actually much, much bigger.
Below you’ll find a Christian Valentine, elephant craft for kids that can be used to help show them just how big God’s love is and just how much He loves us.
While God’s love is immeasurable, this a fun way for kids to equate it to something BIG. This craft would be great to do for a play date, in a church group or Sunday school, for preschoolers, to give as a Valentine, or to simply hang up as a decoration and have as a reminder of God’s unfailing love.

Christian Valentine Craft Instructions
1. First print the templates and then cut them out. I suggest printing on card stock for more durability.
2. Use the templates to trace the shapes on the colored card stock. Then cut out the shapes from the card stock. If you don’t have card stock, you can simply color the template pieces instead.
3. Take the two small hearts and glue one in the center of each of the large hearts.
4. Glue the two large hearts to the back of the circle, as the image below shows. Glue on the googly eyes.
5. Now take the long rectangle piece of card stock and fold it accordion-style. This will be the elephant’s trunk.
6. Glue the long trunk to the middle of the elephant’s face. You can also draw on some eyelashes if you’d like.
7. Next, color the words of the God’s Love is So BIG template any way you’d wish.
8. Finally, glue the elephant to the middle of the God’s Love is So BIG page you just colored. Now you are finished! Hang it up or give it to a friend.
Bible Scriptures About Love
You could also add a Bible verse to the finished product. Just write one of the scriptures below (or one of your favorite scriptures about love) any where on the paper.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
1 John 4:7
We love Him because He first loved us.
1 John 4:19
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

Psalm 136:26
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Hey Sarah,
What a great craft idea!
Can I use this for a small church kids ministry activity?
I read your terms of use on the downloaded file, so I wasn’t sure.
We are learning about Father God Loves Me so this seemed like a great option, but I wanted to honor your terms of use. I have kids from two or three families meeting for kids church.
Thanks,
Candy
