My eyes glaze over, and I fight the urge to start rhythmically bumping my head against the wall. Reading the same book over and over again to an enthusiastic child is enough to kill the joy of even the most bookish mama. When a kid is obsessed, they are really obsessed!
It ‘s like Beezus and Ramona. Anyone else remember Ramona’s obsession with The Littlest Steam Shovel? She begs her big sister Beezus to read about Scoopy over and over again, until Beezus nearly loses her mind. Struck with inspiration, Beezus drags Ramona to the library to pick a new book… only for Ramona to form a new obsession with Big Steve the Steam Shovel.
If there’s a little one in your house obsessed with steam shovels, or construction in general, here are a few excellent titles to pick up on your next library run. These titles are kid {and mom!} approved, and will add some variety to your read-aloud life.
If you have kids that are into sports, check out this list of preschool sports books.
Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. With sweet and simple rhymes this is the perfect bedtime story. Meet all the trucks made for working with asphalt or concrete for parking lot working on the construction site as they shut down for the night.
The Construction Alphabet Book. Life-like, vibrantly colored oil paintings are what make this book. Learn more than you ever wanted to know about construction vehicles, and satiate your child’s desperate hunger for more of their favorite thing.
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Virginia Lee Burton’s classic. This story of outdated technology, hard work, and the value of a machine is a must-read for every complete childhood. When I’m sleep deprived or hormonal, sometimes I tear up reading it to my kids.
Tip Tip Dig Dig. Bright and colorful illustrations complement catchy word patterns. A breezy {quick!} read that will delight your audience.
Curious George and the Dump Truck. This is more story-driven than most construction themed books, and features everyone’s favorite monkey. The cute ducklings are an added bonus!
Unfortunately for Beezus, Ramona decides she can’t bear to part with Big Steve. She writes her name on every single last page of the book, and her mother is forced to pay the library for it. This is a happy ending for Ramona. Unfortunately for Beezus, she’s doomed to reread the same book over and over again. Let’s hope our kids don’t take a page from Ramona’s book- provide them with lots of great titles on their favorite topic, and you’re sure to keep reading aloud fresh for everyone.
