There are many benefits to using copywork in your home and/or homeschool. Things like penmanship practice, improves spelling and vocabulary, reinforces concepts, and can be an aid in memorization.
I love combining copywork with Bible scriptures mainly because of the last two benefits that I listed – reinforces concepts and memorization. Character Copywork was created to help parents and kids build up Godly character qualities, as well as memorize Bible verses.
There is no right or wrong way to use this resource. Use it as you see fit for your family. Here are some of the ideas I had in mind, and use in my family, when I created Character Copywork.
Daily Scripture Copywork – Pick a scripture to copy each day. The scripture reference is given and you simply look up the passage in your favorite Bible translation. I did it this way, instead of providing the whole scripture, so that any Bible version could be used and kids could become more familiar with their Bible.
The pages are set up so that you could focus on one character quality for a week, as there are 7 scriptures selected for each character quality. But you can skip around if you’d like, or focus on one scripture for multiple days if you’d like. It’s completely flexible, so use it as you wish.
I originally created Character Copywork in a monthly format (with a focus on one character trait per month), but with the weekly ones you can now cover more character traits in a shorter period of time if you wish. There are now also non-calendar formats and editable calendars available in the Character Copywork line to offer even more flexibility for families.
New with the weekly calendars is complementing scripture cards!!!
Scripture Memorization – If having your children memorize scripture is important to you (and I know it is for many), you can use this resource as a way to focus on specific scriptures to memorize, as well as to check off once they are mastered. Using the copywork aspect is not completely necessary for this, but highly encouraged as it will only reinforce the learning of the passage.
Character Correction – As Christian parents it is our duty and goal to teach our children to obey God’s commands, to face their own sins, and to become righteous people. But, being the tiny humans that they are, they need a lot of help and guidance. Often times a child will have a specific issue (or two, or three) that they greatly need help correcting. Perhaps you have a child that is always getting caught in a lie, or a child that is constantly antagonizing his siblings, or one that never completes her chores or schoolwork. These are things that need addressing.
To use this resource to help with character correction, choose the character quality that your child needs help with. Use the scriptures listed for that character quality as daily copywork (using it as much as needed), as daily scripture reading (I also recommend reading several scriptures before and after the referenced one, or even that whole chapter in order to get a better sense and understanding for the scripture), and/or as scripture memorization selections to help that child hide God’s word in their heart.
