Thankful for Homeschooling

If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be homeschooling my children, I would have thought you were crazy, and at that time I thought those that did homeschool were crazy!

But, here I am, a homeschooler.  And, I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I’m so thankful that we live in a country where we have the freedom and liberty to choose homeschooling for our children and family.  Here are some of the  reasons I’m thankful for homeschooling –

I’m thankful….

………. for being able to spend most of my kids’ formative years with them.

………. for being able to give my kids individualized instruction.

………. for having the flexibility to learn at our own pace.

………. for being able to focus on our interests.

………. for seeing the smile on my child’s face when they read their first book.

I am thankful for homeschooling because we can take breaks as needed – during family crises, moving across the country, unexpected traveling. We can rearrange a school day if we have doctors appointments and still get everything finished before dinner. Homeschooling allows us to have our evenings free for family time and church events, rather than worrying about finishing homework. We can start school as early or late in the day as we need to. We can school in our pajamas if we want!! I love being able to instill a firm biblical foundation in my children and choose that as our foundation for school and life. I love seeing their eyes light-up when something finally “clicks”!! I love seeing their accomplishments first hand.

I’m thankful for so many things, but one thing I can think of now is that we “own” our evenings and mornings. No more, “I have homework” till all hours of the night… or “Wake up you have to get ready to go…”

I am thankful for homeschooling because it allows us to keep our own schedule. We can get extra sleep if needed, drop everything to eat lunch with Dad or the Grandparents and spend more or less time on subjects as we choose.

I did not start out homeschooling my children. I was the corporate mom… we had a nanny drop the boys off at school and pick them up. I had no idea how close I was to losing their hearts and minds until God changed me and led me to bring them home. Only then did I realize how close I was to being a complete failure as a mom. So, homeschooling has also given me a second chance at being the mom they needed me to be all along, with my priorities straight! Now, we love spending time learning and growing together as a family, working on curriculum at a pace that works for them, learning not only what the textbooks offer, but how to live a life hearing God’s voice and His will and then living it to the best of our ability! Focusing on being a light, studying scripture, and enjoying His creation and exploring it! We are blessed and thankful to be living the homeschool lifestyle!

I’m thankful for homeschooling because it allows my children the freedom to just be kids, explore the world in their own terms, and not be boxed in to society’s standards. I’m thankful for homeschooling because I can spend so much time with my girls. I love seeing them discover new things and all the wildly imaginative games they come up with. I am thankful we can teach to their learning style and not be tied down to the school year schedule. And them being home assists in the bonding and attachment after adoption – we aren’t sending them off to another set of strangers for care.
