I love having Bibles and Bible storybooks around our house. I especially love having different varieties and different levels because my seven children range in age from 13 down to two.
As homeschoolers, I like to incorporate the Bible into our school subjects as often as I can. Our science and history curricula are Bible-based, the literature guides we use have many Bible and scripture references throughout, and we have several beginner Bibles and Bible storybooks to help with learning to read.
I was recently introduced to some adorable books that we will be using as additional means for incorporating the Bible into our reading and phonics learning. One Sentence Storybooks from Tyndale House Publishers are really quite simple, but very well done, and help build confidence in beginning readers.
One Sentence Storybooks is a boxed set of 10 little storybooks. Each storybook is 12 pages long and contains just one sentence. The books begin with just the first words of the sentence and as you turn the pages, the sentence is built upon until you have the complete sentence at the end of the book. I really like this approach because it uses repetition which in turn builds confidence in young readers. I also like it because the phonics program we use incorporates this same kind of technique in their fluency exercises.
At the end of each book is a list of basic vocabulary words that the child will encounter in the book, a Bible Truth related to the sentence, a scripture verse to say or memorize, a short prayer to pray, and a simple reading activity to help reinforce sight words and comprehension.
Overall, I think these books are great! I like how the books use repetition because it really helps with fluency and comprehension. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging and will surely intrigue any child. As soon as my 6-year-old daughter saw the books, she took them to the couch and sat right down with them. She opened one up and told me she was reading! Sure enough, she was (and she is very much a beginning reader). This made her quite happy!
I also appreciate the scripture, Bible Truth, and prayer at the end of each book. These really help to incorporate the Bible even more into our reading lessons.
