But in truth, these fun activities are not what Easter is about. If you are trying to center the focus of Easter back onto Jesus Christ, you and your family will love this DIY Resurrection Eggs that can double as an Easter egg scavenger hunt. What are Resurrection Eggs?

Resurrection eggs are a super fun and creative way to teach your kids the real story of Easter, without giving up the fun of a traditional Easter egg hunt. The idea is simple: each egg contains a portion of the Resurrection story in the form of bible verses, an object, or a picture (or all three!).

After hiding the eggs, send your kids out to find them and bring them back to you. Once you have them all (they are numbered), open them one by one and read the verse, discuss the image, and piece together the story of the Easter Week. It’s all about Jesus Christ, His death on the cross, and His miraculous resurrection.

What Age of Kids is this Activity For?

Resurrection eggs are good for ALL ages of kids! This activity and lesson is very adaptable. You can simplify the hunt for toddlers and preschoolers by using less eggs, or you can make the hunt more complicated and hands-on for older kids by helping them look up the bible verses in their own bibles.

Kids especially love to hold a tiny object that represents the verse they are reading. This really helps send the message home. For example, in the egg with the card labeled “Silver Coins”, place a dime or quarter for the child to hold and look at while you read about Judas.

What supplies do I need to make my resurrection eggs?

Making your own DIY Resurrection Eggs is so easy with only a few supplies. All you need is:

• The printable (found at the end of this post)
• Plastic Easter eggs
• A permanent marker
• Scissors
• A carton or basket to put the eggs in
• Any objects you choose to place in the eggs (optional)

Additional Resurrection Egg Items You May Want to Include (optional)

These additional objects are totally optional! The cards in the printable include little images that are great for illustrating what is going on in the coordinating verse. However, if you want to go above and beyond, placing some objects in each egg is a great way to include the child’s sense of touch and smell in the lesson activity.

*Some of these objects are sharp, or choking hazards, so you need to make sure to watch your children closely and only give them the objects that are appropriate for them.

How To Make Your Own DIY Resurrection Eggs Scavenger Hunt

Step 1. Download the printable

You can find the printable at the end of this post.

Print the PDF at default or 100% scaling. Make sure nothing was cut off during printing.

Step 2. Cut out the cards and place into the eggs

BEFORE YOU CUT decide which cards you are going to use (you can pick your favorites to make the hunt easier/shorter, or use them all!). ** Notice what order they are in before you cut them out, or number them.

Number your plastic eggs with a permanent marker. If you decide to use all of the cards you will need 18 plastic eggs.

Cut out the cards and fold them. Place them in order into the eggs.

*I have not numbered the cards just in case you don’t want to use them all, so make sure you put them in the right order! You want the empty tomb to be last!

Step 3. Add in the additional objects

If you choose to include a small item in each egg, place it in the corresponding egg now.

Then, close your eggs and you are ready to hide them!

Step 4. Going on an Easter egg hunt

Hide your resurrection eggs! After your kids search and find them, here is what you might want to do:

• Bring your kids together and have them line up the eggs in order.
• Together, open one egg at a time and read the verse. Pass around the object and look at the picture.
• Repeat for the rest of the eggs.
• At the end, show them the “Empty Tomb” egg, and explain that because of Jesus’ miraculous death and resurrection, we can all be saved.
• Have any additional discussion you wish to have!
