St. Patrick’s Day rolls around every year on March 17th. Most people celebrate this day with the modern, secular traditions of wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage, and even getting drunk! Many people don’t even know the real story behind the holiday, or the man it’s in honor of. If you’d like to learn more about St. Patrick and the holiday, this is a great article for families.
We often hear people mention luck a lot around St. Patrick’s Day as it’s associated with the holiday as well; actually luck is a word used quite often all throughout the year. The word ‘luck’ is used in many figures of speech; how easy is it to say the expression, ‘Good Luck’ to someone when you are wishing them well?
While I don’t think there is anything wrong with using the word ‘luck,’ I do try to use the word ‘blessed’ instead because words do have power and meaning behind them. Also, people that believe in luck tend to be superstitious and often will have lucky objects or rituals they perform with the hopes that certain things will happen, or not happen (having a lucky coin, knocking on wood, etc.). Putting your hope and faith in these objects and rituals is taking away from your hope and faith in God.
As Christian parents we need to teach our kids about ‘luck’ from a Christian perspective.
Instead of counting our good fortunes, we should be counting our blessings.
God commands us to be strong and courageous; with God always by our side, we don’t need good luck. God’s got our backs!
