A couple days ago I shared with you all a book list I put together for my 6th grader for the upcoming school year. Well, now I’m ready to share with you the rest of the curriculum and resources will be using in our homeschool this year. I have 7 children, ages – 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 3, and 18 months. So this coming year I will roughly have a 6th/7th grader, 4th/5th grader, 2nd grader, PreK/K, two preschoolers and a tot (the longer we homeschool, the less emphasis I put on grade level).
Many factors go into the decisions I make regarding curriculum for our homeschool, and after much thought, prayer, and homework, this is what we have decided to use this year. An (*) means that this is a new curriculum for us this year.
Math
The two biggest kids will be using Teaching Textbooks – Levels 4 and 6. My kids and I both like that all of the instruction and problems are on the computer. I also like that I don’t have to do much teaching with this curriculum; I just help out in any areas they are struggling with.
The next two kids will be using Math-U-See – Levels Primer and Alpha. I’m excited to finally give Math-U-See I try. I’ve heard so many good things about it in the homeschooling community that I want to try it out for myself. *
The 3 oldest kids will also use Math Rider everyday to practice the math facts.
Spelling
- Three of my kids will be using the new Spelling You See curriculum. My kindergartener will be using the first level, Listen and Write; my 4th/5th grader will be using Wild Tales; and my 6th/7th grader will be using American Spirit. I reviewed this curriculum earlier this year and really liked it, so I decided to continue using it and to try out a few different levels as well.
My 2nd grader will be using All About Spelling – Level 1. She has been using All About Reading for phonics and we really like it, so I decided to give All About Spelling a try too.
Reading/Phonics/Literature
- My two oldest are past phonics instruction, but the next two in line are still learning to read and we are using All About Reading for that. This year we will be using level 1 and level 2. For my two preschoolers, we will work on learning the ABCs and letter sounds.
- For literature studies, my three oldest kids will do at least 4 study guides from Progeny Press. They have levels for early elementary all the way through high school.
Grammar
My two oldest will be using Easy Grammar. *
My 2nd grader will be using First Language Lessons – Level 2. I really like the gentle, simple approach that this curriculum offers.
Writing/Composition
- I’ve heard great things about WriteShop, so I’m going to try out Write Shop Junior with both my boys – 4th/5th grade and 6th/7th grade. *
- My 2nd grader will be using Writing With Ease – Level 2 which goes along nicely with First Language Lessons.
Handwriting
- The 4 big kids (5, 7, 9, 11) will all be using Handwriting Without Tears. We’ve been using this for several years and have been happy with the results.
Vocabulary
The 3 big kids will all be using Wordly Wise. We started using Wordly Wise about 4 years ago, took a break from it and decided to go back to it because it’s a thorough, well-done vocabulary curriculm.
History
- This year my boys (11 & 9) have requested to learn about the Civil War so we will be doing American history. We will use America the Beautiful from Notgrass which we reviewed last year and really enjoyed.
- My girls (7 & 5) will be starting Mystery of History Vol. 1. They have tagged along as their brothers have used this course in the past, but now I will be digging in a little deeper with them.
Science
All of the kids will be doing Apologia’s Zoology 2 this year. Apologia is our favorite for elementary science.
Art
- We discovered a new art curriculum last year that we really like – See the Light. I love that it is a Christian curriculum and all of the instruction is on DVD.
Preschool
For my twin boys that are 3, we will use Little Hands to Heaven from Hearth of Dakota. I love the simplicity and ease of use of this Bible-based curriculum. There’s not much prep work required and my girls still enjoy this curriculum so I have little helpers as well.
Bible
For Bible, the 4 oldest kids will be using Explorer’s Bible Study. I actually discovered this curriculum when we first started homeschooling, but never used it. I decided to give it a second look and try it out this year. *

Hi Sarah, I see you have some real fun stuff planned for next year. We, too, will be using All About Spelling, WriteShop, and Handwriting without Tears. And a lot of others that you haven’t listed too 🙂
We are using some of the same courses. I’ve got the Art course and we are using TT as our math supplement and are loving both. I can’t wait for your review on WriteShop. Visiting from List It Tuesday hop
How do you like All About Reading? I think my son needs Level 2, but I hesitate to buy something I’ve never heard much about.
Apologia is a favorite science curriculum in this household too! (We use it and AIG.) The hands on experiments and in-depth explanations are incredible. We all learn something from each lesson.
