As I mentioned in my previous post about our 5th grade curriculum selections, for reading, my 5th grader will have a list of books to chose from for his independent reading time, as well as a reading log to track his progress and what he’s read.
Here is the 5th grade reading list that I came up with for him to pick and choose from (in no particular order):
- Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry
- The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
- The Door in the Wall by Marguerite DeAngeli
- Hans Brinker: The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
- My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
- Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
- Life in the Great Ice Age by Michael and Beverly Oard
- The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill
- Gentle Ben by Walt Morey
- The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford
- The Apple and the Arrow by Mary and Conrad Buff
- The Buffalo Knife by William O. Steele
- Snow Treasure by Marie McSwign
- Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat
- The Black Stallion by Walter Farley
- In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bettie Bao Lord
- Cabin on Trouble Creek by Jean Van Leeuwen
- The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting
- Scripture Sleuth Volumes 1-5 by Mat Halverson
- Sugar Creek Gang Volumes 1-6 by Paul Hutchens

Hi Sarah! This is a great book list! My oldest son is starting 5th grade this year, so this is very much appreciated 🙂 I would love for you to email me the reading log at [email protected]
Have your kids read the Chronicles of Narnia series? I would recommend them 🙂
Thanks so much!

Kathy – I sent you the reading log! Thanks for stopping by!
We have the Narnia series, but my oldest son (5th grade) has not read them all yet. I debated about putting it on the list. I figure he will end up reading some of them this year anyway.
Blessings!
Your reading list looks good. I might add in another Farley Mowatt (The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be), A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle, and a James Herriott or two.
Thanks for the recommendations! I will definitely check them out!!
I’d also love the reading log : )

Thanks, Lisa
Awesome list! If you upload your document to Google (now Drive used to be docs), then you can make a direct link or pdf on your site. Hope this helps!
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try that!
Blessings!
THis is a great list. I am teaching Drawn Into the HEart of Reading at our co-op and we are reading 5 of the books on this list. I love Gentle Ben and the kids really like the Scripture Sleuth books. We made an audio recording of a couple of chapters from the Scripture Sleuth book with sound effects. Lots of fun. Another book many students enjoyed is Little Pilgrim’s Progess adapted by Helen Taylor. Many great lessons for our journey to heaven.
Could you please email me the reading log? [email protected]
Check out Gregor the Overlander. The kids loved it. It has life size bats, roaches, spiders, etc.
Hi Nikki – I actually have made a new reading log, plus a book report form; you can go here and download it for free.

I teach at a Catholic school and I have had a lot of trouble finding suggested reading for a particular student which is aligned with the set of values her family has worked to foster in her. I appreciate your 5th grade reading list. It’s so hard to think on the spot about books that would be appropriate and entertaining for her. Some books that are targeted towards these intermediate level learners are just not appropriate. I know most of these titles and feel confident that I can keep this busy reader busy reading for a few weeks without worrying her family. Thanks!
