I’m quite positive many of you have families like mine who absolutely love pizza! It seems that they rarely get tired of it! You can order out or buy it frozen but by far, the best way to have a family pizza night is to make it yourself! It’s definitely cheaper and certainly more fun when you make something as a family.
We have tried out so many different recipes for pizza crust from a variety of places including refrigerated dough, mixes and online recipes. We have finally hit the jackpot though with a pizza dough recipe from my favorite cookbook, Amish Home Cooking with Elsa.
I was given this book as a wedding gift almost ten years ago but I didn’t really start using it until recently. Why do I love it? The recipes are great! Almost every one we’ve tried has been amazing. It’s got breakfast, dinners, snacks, and desserts. I also love that its recipes are meant for larger families and are usually in large quantities. Yesterday, for example, I wanted to make chocolate chip cookies. I cut the recipe in half and got two dozen cookies instead of four! The only thing that some may not like is that it does come from Amish so some words are different but there is a help page in there for that.
Now, onto our topic of family pizza night – large family style!
There are two ways to do family pizza night. One, I can make it into two thick crusted pizzas, one for the kids and one for the adults. You can definitely get more if you like thinner crust. I usually do this if we are pressed for time. Option number two is the one the kids like the most. Make your own pizza! They get to roll it out, put their sauce, cheese and toppings of choice onto the pizza and then I pop it into the oven to bake. Kids love cooking and what’s better than making your very own pizza? With this recipe I’ve made five kid-sized personal pizzas and one cookie sheet sized pizza for the adults.
The night I took these pictures we had our four blessings plus two little boys we babysit for a friend, so a total of six kiddos and two adults for our pizza night. We ended up with some of our pizza left over but every one of the kids devoured their entire pizza!
Pizza Dough (Recipe from “Amish Home Cooking with Elsa“)
4 1/2 cups flour (you can use white, wheat or a combo of both which is my favorite)
1/2 cup warm water
2 Tablespoons of yeast
3/4 cup warm milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
1/3 cup of oil
2 eggs
Directions
1. Soak yeast in water for about five minutes.
2. Add the remaining ingredients, saving flour for last.
3. Mix and let rise in a warm place (about 30 minutes).
4. Roll out dough, top as desired and bake at 350 degrees.
