We were super excited to have the opportunity to review the On the Farm: The Prodigal Pig DVD. We discovered the On the Farm videos about six or seven years ago (we owned several on VHS, gasp) and this was one we hadn’t seen, so we were eager to see what Farmer Bob and all of the farm animals were up to in this video, and what lessons they had in store for us to learn.
In case you didn’t guess it from the title, this DVD is the On the Farm version of the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32). Your kids will laugh and learn along with all of the quirky characters on Farmer Bob’s farm. They will learn the value of forgiveness and love as they watch the story of Porkchop, the pig, who leaves the farm to pursue his big musical dreams. With 10 years worth of allowance in his pocket, he heads off to the city to hopefully make it big. It’s not long before he finds himself with no money, no friends, and no place to go except another farm that now won’t let him leave. Thankfully, his old farmyard friends save the day and as you may have guessed, Farmer Bob welcomes him home with open arms.
The 60-minute DVD features the voice talents of Randy Travis, Amy Grant, and Vince Gill. The DVD also has bonus educational features that include a music video and cartoon based on the letter ‘P’, a read-along digital storybook, and a version of the Prodigal Pig with pop-up words every time a word begins with ‘P’ is used.
All of my kids absolutely adore the On the Farm videos and characters, from age 10, down to age 2. Hercules the rooster is one of our favorites! Not only is this video entertaining (even for adults), but it teaches the importance of forgiveness. I’m always thrilled to find videos with good quality content since that’s hard to find these days.
