As soon as my oldest child reached the 5th grade, I had no doubt what history curriculum I wanted to use. I had discovered Notgrass a few years earlier and couldn’t wait to be able to use it in our homeschool.
So far we have completed America the Beautiful (American history) and are currently working through Uncle Sam and You (American government). Being that it is an election year, I thought it would be the perfect time to do that course. And waiting in the wing is Notgrass’ newest middle school history course, From Adam to Us (world history).
I’m sure you are here mostly for the giveaway (and I don’t blame you), but if you’d like to know a little bit more about the middle school Notgrass history curriculum, check out America the Beautiful. While this review is on America the Beautiful, all three course have a similar layout and format.
From Adam to Us by Ray and Charlene Notgrass is a one-year world history and literature course designed for students in grades five through eight. The daily lessons are written in a narrative style and richly illustrated with color photographs and maps. Primary sources, literature, and hands-on activities help the student connect with the history in a personal way. With parental help and supervision, younger children can participate in many activities and can benefit from hearing the lessons read aloud.

Medieval : what a time, I love reading about the Scottish Highlands, it was such a hard life but what a romantic environment to live in. I am fascinate by Picktish history too, beyond this though I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching my children about the Tudor & Victorian times in Britain. I read a book once about someone going through time & I often wonder how we would cope, coming from our push button society, where everything we want or need to do is supplied at the end of a button. I spent about a month living in a Teepee , no water on tap, no electricity or gas at the turn of a button…. I found the time magical & inspirational. I have tried to teach my children in as practical a way as possible, as well as using written literature & course work. It can be great fun to teach that way and occasionally get out into the fresh air for lessons

I was never big on History growing up since the way it was taught in public school. Now that I’m older learning it through books, videos and movies I love it so there isn’t one time I prefer. I’m making it fun for my kids by videos, cooking different recipes of that time period, fun books that document history through different point of views like a dog point of view that was a hero. My children loves animals and they played a big part also. Examples like that. Little known heros, traveling to a site of hands on and movies. History is not just about facts but real emotions. That’s what peaked my interest.
