K is for Knowledge – The ABCs of Homeschooling {guest post – Annette}

The Letter K

You know, when I agreed to do the letter K for this guest post I had all sorts of ideas that I could do for it. Can I remember ANY of those ideas???? NO.

Hi, I’m Annette. I normally can be found over at A Net In Time.  It is my pleasure to be here today chatting with you all.

So K… what can I do for the letter K? As I sit here and write what comes to my forehead is KNOWLEDGE. K is for Knowledge.

As a homeschooler knowledge is key, you know.

Knowing yourself.
Knowing your student.
Knowing your subject matter.

Knowledge comes in many different forms.

It can come in the guise of an international student staying for three weeks over the summer. We love having these students. We learn so much.  And I hope they do as well.

It can come from practical experiences, where children learn by doing. Whether it be hands on science experiments, making mistakes, playing hard and putting into their play the things they are learning or going for nature walks. It’s all good.

Knowledge can come from books, and information put together by other knowledgeable folks.  We read a lot in this household, so we learn from fiction, non-fiction, biographies and more. It’s fun to learn things. Some of the books we’ve had the most enjoyment learning from over the past year  include the Burgess Books, 100 facts about, Island of the Blue Dolphin, Little House on the Prairie, Geronimo Stilton and Junie B Jones. These books are good to read and fun too. They stimulate a child’s imaginative play. Some knowledge comes to us via the internet, and that is why having reliable home internet services is important. Catching bugs and then looking them up to learn more about them. Reading something in a book and then saying ‘oh…. I wonder if that’s true’ (and finding out sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn’t).

group does. My son is not allowed to take any class that I am teaching, so he learns from 3 other
people for six weeks in the spring and fall. This is a good thing.

Knowledge is gained from curriculum, from life experiences, from the world around us. Knowledge
surrounds us, but the best knowledge comes from knowing God. The fear of God is the beginning of
wisdom and so this is what we need to seek first. Knowing who God is, planting Him into our lives as
we learn and grow. This is the very best knowledge, knowing God puts the rest of the knowledge we
gain into proper perspective. This I know.
