As each new school year approaches, I like to make a reading list for each of my kids for the upcoming school year.
Here is the list that I have made for my 7th grader. Some of the titles are part of the history curriculum he will be using, some of them go along with the literature guides we use, and the others are just ones that I thought he would enjoy and ones he can pick and choose from.

- Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler
- Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman
- Brighty Of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry
- The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane by Russell Freedman
- Carry On Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
- Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
- The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
- The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
- The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford

As a homeschooler, I hate to admit this, but I don’t use my local library as much as I should. We moved 8 months ago and I’ve actually never been to the library in our new town. I used to use our old library all the time and was spoiled with the inter-library loan system they had. I could get practically any book I wanted.
Being a homeschooling mom of 7 and running an online business means that life can be pretty busy around here and sometimes it’s just easier to own the books than to worry about borrowing them from the library during the times they are scheduled into our year. But let’s be honest, that isn’t always affordable.
That’s why I was pretty excited to learn about Thrift Books. Thrift Books sells used books at the lowest everyday price on the internet. They have an unbeatable selection of 7 million books, honest/accurate grading and features that help you find out-of-print and second-hand treasures.
I took advantage of their FREE Shipping on US Orders of $10 or more and their Thrift Deals bargain section and got 7 of the titles from the 7th grade reading list above for just over $20.
With the Thrift Deals bargains, you get any title marked with a DEAL tag on the detail page for:
- 2 books for $7
- 3 books for $10
- 4 books for $12
- each additional book is $3
They also offer a loyalty program and referral program for opportunities to save even more.
- Reading Rewards – the loyalty program has no annual fee and rewards you with a $5 coupon for every $50 you spend on books.
- Tell-a-Friend – the referral program gives your friends & family a 15% OFF coupon, as a new customer. You also get one for referring them if they sign up within 14 days; unless you’re a Reading Rewards member. Then it’s 20%!
I was very pleased with the books I received. I only ordered ones that were in the best condition and all of them looked practically new or had minimal wear. Here are two pictures that showed the ‘worst’ of the wear –
So if you are looking for a thrifty way to build up your home library, I definitely recommend checking out Thrift Books! They have a huge selection and books for all ages and interests. I even found some homeschool curriculum titles on there!
