5th grade reading list

As I mentioned in my previous post about our 5th grade curriculum selections, for reading, my 5th grader will have a list of books to chose from for his independent reading time, as well as a reading log to track his progress and what he's read.

Here is the list of books I came up with for him to pick and choose from (in no particular order):

  1. Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry
  2. The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
  3. The Door in the Wall by Marguerite DeAngeli
  4. Hans Brinker: The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
  5. My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
  6. Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
  7. Life in the Great Ice Age by Michael and Beverly Oard
  8. The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill
  9. Gentle Ben by Walt Morey
  10. The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford
  11. The Apple and the Arrow by Mary and Conrad Buff
  12. The Buffalo Knife by William O. Steele
  13. Snow Treasure by Marie McSwign
  14. Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat
  15. The Black Stallion by Walter Farley
  16. In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bettie Bao Lord
  17. Cabin on Trouble Creek by Jean Van Leeuwen
  18. The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting
  19. Scripture Sleuth Volumes 1-5 by Mat Halverson
  20. Sugar Creek Gang Volumes 1-6 by Paul Hutchens

And here is what our reading log looks like.  Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to directly link to the PDF file, so in the mean time, if you are interested in using this reading log, shoot me an email or reply in the comments section and I will send it to you.

What's on your upper elementary reading list?  What books would you recommend for upper elementary?

    1. Kathy - I sent you the reading log! Thanks for stopping by!

We have the Narnia series, but my oldest son (5th grade) has not read them all yet. I debated about putting it on the list. I figure he will end up reading some of them this year anyway.

      Blessings!

  3. Your reading list looks good. I might add in another Farley Mowatt (The Dog Who Wouldn't Be), A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle, and a James Herriott or two.

  6. Awesome list! If you upload your document to Google (now Drive used to be docs), then you can make a direct link or pdf on your site. Hope this helps!

    2. THis is a great list. I am teaching Drawn Into the HEart of Reading at our co-op and we are reading 5 of the books on this list. I love Gentle Ben and the kids really like the Scripture Sleuth books. We made an audio recording of a couple of chapters from the Scripture Sleuth book with sound effects. Lots of fun. Another book many students enjoyed is Little Pilgrim's Progess adapted by Helen Taylor. Many great lessons for our journey to heaven.
